Every number you buy now has an auto-renew switch. Turn it off and the number is not charged again. It keeps working until the end of the period you already paid for, and is released after that.
Before, the only way to stop a renewal was to release the number, which ended service at once. You can also set it over the API: see Buy a number over the API.
